>> and i'm dave clark. first we do to steve paulson. >> dave, pam, thank you. it still seems about the same as yesterday. not much change. the rain is almost out of the picture but still some heading toward the central valley. 60s and 70s to a few upper 70s today. here is sal. steve, good morning. highway 4 looks okay coming up to the willow pass grade with no major problems. you will see that traffic okay. also this morning's commute looks good on the san mateo bridge. it is 5:00 let's go back to the desk. we have breaking news. oakland firefighters are investigating a fire at a well known bakery. ktvu was the first television news crew on the scene and tara moriarty is here now with exclusive video of this fire. tara. >> reporter: we pulled up within 15 minutes after that 911 call. when we first arrived we didn't see any flames. just heavy thick black smoke that was blowing into the parking lot making it very difficult to breathe.
if you take a look behind me here you can see the pay yows sign. this is a very popular landmark and bakery that has been dishing out pies and cakes for more than 50 years. and now it may be closed for awhile. the biggest flames we saw were shooting out of the back of the building. this is exclusive video. the 911 call came in at 2:45 they were able to knock out the fire within 45 minutes. 32 firefighters tackled the flames. some sort of plastic was burning which made it toxic. >> i seen the fire, the smoke. i was just leaving the apartment. >> did you realize it was the bakery? >> yeah. i saw the fire.
>> reporter: the fire investigators obscene trying to figure out how the fire started. it isn't the first fire. another one broke out five years ago. officials say that fire was sparked by faulty electrical wiring that burned the front roof off and caused $150,000 in damage. now as far as the future of merits now that will been to the public health department. but by the way it looks right now that is not going to happen. oakland firefighters ducked for cover dodging gunfire. police say that -- claudine wong is at the fire station. claudine. an amazing story. >> reporter: absolutely, pam. i want to show you what they did with the window that was shattered. there is plastic up over it. that is where the bullet exited
the fire station after traveling through that entire equipment bay. i want to show you where it came from. we have video of the 5,000 block of melrose where the shooting happened. this is a few blocks where the fire station is located. dozens of shots fired. one victim struck by gunfire. he was taken to highland hospital where he died. but again where these bullets went after being fired at that location. one of them did travel down here and it did have firefighters ducking for cover. >> that is when they heard the glass break. they dove underneath the fire engine. firefighters upstairs stated that they heard the bullets zipping by and they dove down upstairs. >> reporter: fortunately no one in the fire station was hit. one of the bullets at least one that we know of went through the back window out through the front window. across the street and hit a
house. eight firefighters inside at the time this happened. it's never come this close. and certainly we're fearing for their lives. very worried about it. tweeting about oh my gosh where did this bullet come from? they heard the shots thinking they were gipping to respond to the call they were going to respond to the call. never thinking they were going to be part of the call. cleveland police are rethinking about how they handle missing persons cases. three brothers living that that home have been arrested. they are scheduled to be interviewed today. >> i'm happy they found them, but i'm very disappointed it took ten years. ten years to find them.
>> neighbors say they reported seeing strange things including women banging on the windows. police never went into the home to investigate the claims. coming up at 5:22 we will go to live to cleveland for more live on the case. 5:04. >> san jose police say a man robbed a shoe store by posing as a sub contractor. now officers have released two photos of the suspect wearing a hard hat. take a look. he's accused of robbing the dfw shoe store on april 25th by forcing the store manager to open the safe. police say he left with an undisclosed amount of money. surveillance camera took the picture of the getaway car. a white vehicle. possibly a toyota prius. there is growing criticism of the actions of a limo driver as the flames engulf the limo. several survivors and relatives
of those that died told the chronical that brown was slow to react. and he did little to help the women. brown said he did everything possible to help and he feels terrible about the fire. in the meantime the coroners office has released the maim of all five women that died in that limo while heading to a wedding party. near raise virginia fojas was the bride. 46-year-old anna al con terra also had two children. and 43-year-old filmy know gore reason georgia was the mother of two children.
back in march 32 seismic bolts broke. the bridge management team says two retrofit options are under consideration. a final choice will be revealed today along with details about the cost. we are also expected to find out if the span is on track to open on labor day as planned. time now 5:07. sal is back. is the east shore ready for the commute? >> it is ready for the commute. and traffic looks good coming on westbound 80. so far coming in from vallejo and gulfing all the way -- and moving all the way down to the mccarthur maze. there is no problems on the bay bridge toll plaza. we like to look at it now. get what it looks like when

low clouds. yesterday the cloud deck was way, way up there. sunny and warm. 60s and 70s. mid 70s or a few upper 70s inland. as the low moves out that allows heights to rise. lots of sunshine. warmer. 60s and 70s to mid 80s. i don't think we will see the 90s or anything. a little bit cooler on the lows this morning. livermore 53. 52 san francisco. i also saw the same for san rafael. even concord 53. cloudy skies for most. cloudy to mostly cloudy. a west wind at oakland. a westerly breeze at sfo. so things have turned. now we are getting a little bit of a sea breeze. that will keep temperatures in check today until high pressure builds in over the weekend. today we get that low cloud deck but there is is also a little bit of rain. it looks like things are about done in the sierra but there could be lingering showers up around kirk wood. 30s to 60s on the temps. in fact down in southern
california not that warm because of that low. but the low son the way out. westerly breeze some thicker fog. temperatures 60s and 70s to a few upper 70s here. i think we have to wait until about tomorrow to get the low 80s. we'll carry that right into the weekend. time now 5:09. an elderly man was almost beaten to death in fresno. what police are doing to calm the fears in the community. congress gets anxious today about the deadly attacks on the u.s. attacks in libya. u.s. 4 is off to a good start here.
welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 5:13 is the time right now. fresno police say an attack on an elderly man was an isolated hate crime. the 82-year-old victim was coming out of a sikh temple when he was hit in the head with a steel pipe. last night fresno police held a community forum in hopes of -- but sikh members fear they were targeted after 9/11 and now after the boston bombings. >> people are always looking
for an easy target. and it's ignorance and they don't know who they are basically going against. >> police caught the suspect a 29-year-old transient a half a mile from the temple. former republican south carolina governor mark sanford is back in politics. in his victory speech he compared himself to rather us who was resurrected from the dead. that woman is now his fiance and sanford defeated democrat elizabeth colbert-bush. later this morning congress gets testimony from whistle blowers about the deadly september attack at a u.s. consulate in benghazi libya.

a pond near the home where an eight-year-old girl was stabbed to death in calibers are county. her body was found by her 12- year-old brother back on april 27th. he said he saw a tall man with long gray hair leaving their house. the calibers are county sheriffs office says they are close to solving this case. state senator leeland guy is planning to introduce legislation that would ban 3d printers to make guns. staples announced they would begin selling them next month. time now 5:16. let's get everybody moving. sal, what is happening at the toll plaza? >> i'm moving dave, and pam. even though it looks like i'm sitting still here i am moving.

with the discovery of those three missing women in cleveland are expected to be interviewed. tory dunnan is in cleveland. tory. >> reporter: today the investigation will continue at the house but also the interrogation process will happen with those three suspects. but at the same time these three women at this point are really trying to meet some of those family members after a decade. amanda berry's brand mother waited ten years for this phone call. >> hello. >> amanda. >> yes grandma. >> how are you? >> i'm fine. >> i thought you were gone. >> nope, i'm here. >> reporter: the last time they talked berry was just 16. but on monday she escaped from a cleveland home with the help of a neighbor and made is a desperate call for police. >> i need them now. >> reporter: for three families
years of searching, desperation, and heart ache over in an instant. >> if you don't believe in miracles, i suggest you think again. >> reporter: amanda berry, gina dejesus disappeared between 2002 and 2004. they were found on monday in a home three miles away. family members of one of the women said berry and dejesus were in good condition but knight was weak and thin. now three brothers are behind bars awaiting charges. police say they never received any tips regarding the women in the house. but neighbors are left to wonder how signs went unnoticed. reports of a naked woman spotted in the backyard yelling. suspect ariel castro seen with a little girl. >> those are things we overlooked. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating the case as the three women and their families
begin to heal. and dave, of course the investigation will continue today at the suspects home throughout the past 24 hours or so they have been going in and gathering evidence. authorities are saying they can expect to see the same. >> thank you, tory. kidnapping survivor jc dugard held hostage for 18 years is reacting to the news of the three women being found alive. last night she was in washington, d.c. being honored if ever her work with kidnapped victims. >> i want to say what an ahazing time to be talking about hope -- amazing time to be talking about hope with everything that has happened. >> dugard was kidnapped when she was 11 years old. she wants to know that the kidnapping and abuse should not define who they are. arch rival at the san francisco giants showed off his softer side.

and 70s coast and bay. westbound 24 the traffic here looks good between walnut creek and oakland. not a bad commute at all. also this morning we are looking at 80 westbound as you head out to the mccarthur maze. now back to the desk. we continue to follow our breaking thinks out of oakland. hours ago a fire swept through a landmark bakery. tara moriarty joins us now from the scene with new video of damage from inside that bakery. >> reporter: we just spoke to a man who has been working at merritt for 35 years. he's trying to get in touch with his boss to let him know what happened. it looks like merritt's restaurant and bakery will be closed until it's deemed safe. that is because of the heavy toxic smoke that was billowing from the building. the biggest flames were shooting from the back of the building. this is exclusive video of the
fire. a 911 call coming in 15 minutes before we arrived. 32 firefighters were able to knock out the fire within 45 minutes. the chief says the fire broke out on the first floor and spread to the top floor. >> it was thick black smoke. >> reporter: describe what could have been burning. >> some type of plastic. some kind of petroleum products. something of that nature. at that point everybody is on oxygen. >> reporter: we just got a tour of the inside of the building to see the damage. no stimes on how much it will cost to repair. this is as you me -- it's been dishing out pies and cakes for for than 50 years. this isn't the first fire as we
mentioned. that fire sparked foughty detective call firings. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty. police in -- the intersection at tenth was opened a few urs ago. a driver in small sedan hit a pedestrian in that intersection at 8:20 last night. right now investigators say they are not sure if the man was hit while in a crosswalk. >> the pedestrian was transported by the berkeley fire department to a local hospital. he is in critical condition. >> police are saying the driver did stop and is cooperating with investigators. they say they are looking into whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor. we now continue our coverage of the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. we are now hearing the radio communications between emergency dispatchers and first responders. and the tapes make it clear that everyone knew immediately they were dealing with a very
serious situation. >> a vehicle fire westbound 92 west of the high-rise. report of a vehicle fire limo with possible entrapment. >> multiple locations. people trapped. this limo on the west side of the high-rise. >> the limo caught fire on the far western end of the san mateo bridge and that made it difficult for first responders to get there quickly. now we want to show you video from the philippines. this shows the mother of the bride that died. she is looking at a photo album filled with pictures of her daughter. neriza wished her an early happy mothers day.
>> i asked him, what is wrong with you? what is going on? he just told me it's going to be mothers day and i don't have a mother. >> some of the victim's families are planning a memorial service this mother's day weekend. the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge is having a big impact on the bay area filipino community. we'll see how filipino television station with studios on the peninsula is responding to the tragedy that is coming up at 5:45. your time is 5:35. ktvu has learned the 49ers plan to make a big announcement today. it's about the name of the team's new billion stadium. is janine de la vega is joining us live. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we have been watching this new stadium going up and significant process is being made.
we're expecting to hear what company may get to name it later today. sources tell ktvu the 49ers plan to hold a news conference to announce a naming rights deal in san francisco. it's also possible a new name for the stadium will be announced for the 68,000 feet facility. the naming rights is important because it will be significant to financing the stadium. san francisco based company levi strauss is the front runner. >> it's exciting. i think it would be fine i think anybody that gets the naming rights it's bing to be great. it's a new stadium. the nfl is huge. the whole world will know about it. and it's going to be our home for awhile. so i'm just excited to find out if that's what it will be. >> reporter: levi strauss obtained the domain rights such as levi field and stadium. but up until recently the company was still a top choice.
the 49ers and city officials won't discuss the announcement or which company will be be awarded the naming rights. reporting live from santa clara janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time now 5:36. drivers you are being warned about heavy traffic in the napa area in the next couple of days. the bottle rock music festival is getting under way. tonight. there is a preview with obviously a couple acts. bigger crowd is expected tomorrow through sunday. that is when the festival officially kicks off. the four-day event features 50 bands playing from noon until 10:30 at night. the concert could effect traffic on interstate 80 highways 12 and 221 and other roads leading in and out of the expoi. the highway patrol will have 40 officers helping to control the traffic out there. the motels they have also been booked up in fairfield and

look good. if you are driving on bay shore boulevard in brisbane, there is a truck accident just off the freeway there that may cause delays. high of 38. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. still some rain. san joaquin valley. some of that might head back toward sacramento valley. contra costa county could get a passing shower in the morning. the low give it credit. it was impressive for may. morning fog annulose clouds. low clouds still left behind. it will be sunny today but mild to warm inland. a lot of sunshine. a little warmer but not much. i think that is mainly for those inland areas. today you can see some of the lows. 51 santa rosa. 52 in san francisco. i know san rafael is also 52. napa is in there. concord. and i don't take out taxes either so you get paid very
well. 56 in san jose. oakland 57 degrees. a little bit more of a westerly breeze. the wind direction. the wind is coming from. travis 21 miles an hour. that is impressive. but overall a lot of low clouds in place and most of the rain is confined to areas east of us. yosemite down to fresno picking up rain. 30s to 60s on the temps. it looks like just the high desert as that system moves outs. morning fog, sunny. a westerly breeze in place. there is a little bit thicker fog as well. temperatures 60s and 70s for most. livermore only 73. 72 san jose. santa cruz 72. a little warmer tomorrow and then we will take that into the weekend. 5:40 is the time right now.

so it will be on the cooler side for some. 60 and 70s. welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a look at some of the top stories we are following for you. last night a stray bullet flew through an oakland fire station. none of the firefighter were hurt but they dove for cover under their fire engine. one man out on the street was killed in that shooting. the search goes on for the shooter. an investigation continues into an early morning fire at merritt bakery in oakland. it started at 2:45 this morning. it took about 45 minutes to put those flames out. five years ago there was another fire there. whistle blowers in the state department will testify on the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the whistle blowers are accusing the government of not responding appropriately to
that attack. as protests continue outside the funeral home of where the body of tamerlan tsarnaev is being held. one man is offering a solution. the body is at the funeral home. the city manager has already said the body is not welcome there. >> this person no matter how much of a pariah, no matter how despicable, no matter what allener he is is a human being and he deserves the right to be buried like anybody else. >> paul king says the tamerlan family can use his plot in the memory of his mother. he taught sunday school and taught him to love everyone unconditionally. the accused gunman in the
movie theater shooting -- the as judge d12 people died. 58 others were injured in that movie theater massacre. rescue crews in mexico still searching for the remains of people who were caught in a deadly gas explosion. natural gas tanker blew up early yesterday near mexico city after hitting a center divide on the freeway. police say the area that explosion is lined with houses. at least 22 people are known to be dead. almost three dozen more were hurt. back here at home richmond city leaders may hire a high profile law firm to seek damages from chevron. that august 6th fire injured several workers and about 15,000 people sought medical treatments at hospitals. the contra costa times reports

time now 5:49. let's bring sal back. get everybody out the door. what happened in brisbane. >> we have an accident that happened on bridge shore boulevard. not that far from highway 101. this happened earlier this morning when a car and a big rig got into an accident or suv and forked the big rig complete -- and forced the big rig completely off the roadway. no one was seriously hurt. that is the suv station wagon there. according to reports made a u- turn, cut him up. they were closed for site some time. this is bay shore boulevard close to highway 101 in brisbane but it looks like the traffic will resume to normal. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. there is a small delay in one of the lanes. if you are driving on the

activity and rain. that is off -- morning fog and sunny. 60s to upper 60s and 70s. that will go mid 70s though out toward gilroy and oakley. fremont 68. mountain view 71. 62 half-moon bay. little warmer on thursday and then we kick it up a notch or two on friday. raising home prices and steady prices -- trance union says 4.5% of homeowners are two months behind on their house prices. that is down 21% compared to the last three months of last year. before the housing bust only about 2% of homeowners were lost with that. bay area based electronic arts stock hitting high price of the year right now in premarket trading.
